Iz2013

Many of you reading this message know Instigatorzine as the best place to find Literature and Art in Jersey City (and eventually the world!), but to the IZ staff, it's been three years of hard work.

1

In 2012, we saw our largest, fastest growth in regards to exposure and content. Many new faces have joined and left our ranks, while past Instigators have returned to help us create the best magazine we can. And how can we forget the massive love and support we've received from the Jersey City. Surely, IZ wouldn't be here without your warm embrace.

Of course, Instigatorzine isn't without faults. Throughout 2012, there have been schedule concerns with subscriptions. While it is inexcusable, our lateness is due to our small staff. Some members have had to juggle multiple responsibilities, and a tight release schedule didn't make things easier. However, like all mistakes and failures, we can find an opportunity to learn from them and perform better.

In 2013, IZ will shift to a subscription-only, quarterly schedule (March, June, September, and December--now you can hold us to it) to allow more breathing room for us to develop what will ultimately be a better product overall. We will be delivering exclusive content like limited-edition stickers, artist prints, writers' chapbooks, and a free digital copy to subscribers, offering more bang for your hard-earned buck.

Did we mention digital? You read correctly. Although we still love physical products, the future is here, and we're embracing digital. While you'll only be able to receive the physical magazine and all that awesome, exclusive, bonus content when you subscribe, you can still purchase digital singles through our new website debuting next month. What? New website? (We're dropping bombs in this post!) Our new website will be fully functional and will be the primary source for all your IZ needs.

9_collage

This shift in publishing obviously raises questions regarding our current subscribers who have yet to finish their subscriptions. Current subscribers will be “grandfathered” into the new system. This means that if a person signed up for One Year (6 issues), they will still get those six issues beginning with the first issue they’ve received. We understand that some of our magazines have been late. We want to make sure subscribers get the full value of a subscription with IZ. If there are any conflicts I have not mentioned in this message, please send us a message at: questions@instigatorzine.com

With this year coming to a close, we're looking forward to 2013 and a mightier Instigatorzine. We couldn't have gotten here without your love and support. Thank you.

Happy New Year, INSTIGATOR!

This Saturday, November 3, Sylvia Ji will feature "La Catrina," new paintings of the Catrina, synonymous with her name to fame, in her 5th solo with Corey Helford Gallery Circa in Culver City, CA.

“La Catrina” will exhibit twenty-three paintings, including a series of smaller works. “I’ve tried to incorporate many of the textiles and patterns that evoke the indigenous spirit of Mexico,” says Sylvia. The rich hues and tonalities inlaid with traditional patterns and metallic foil motifs create an exhibition of saturnine beauty, resonant with life.

The opening reception for “La Catrina” takes place Saturday, November 3 at CHG Circa. The reception is open to the public, and the exhibition will be on view through December 1, 2012.

If you're in the Los Angeles area, this is a show you want to see.

It's a pretty big deal when you and your group's efforts are recognized by the municipality.

That happened in 2008 when Hudson County Cultural Affairs presented _gaia co-founder, Doris Caçoilo, the Hudson County Leadership in the Arts Award for her work with _gaia Studio. It's no surprise that Caçoilo deserves this award. Through _gaia, she's been able to organize women artists around women's issues, activism, and support local artists.

Strange to think that just ten years ago, _gaia was just a small group of women in a basement, and now, it's grown to dozens of women, exhibiting work locally and on the road, from Brooklyn to Cyprus, and helping to bring a community together through art.

Happy TEN, _gaia! Here's to TEN MORE!

Enveloping all of 2011, Wonder Woman 7: New News is Old News, is probably the largest _gaia project to date. With three different exhibitions in three different cities (Newark, Brooklyn, Cyprus), two residencies in two parts of the globe (Jersey City, Cyprus), and one awesome project, it's difficult to argue otherwise. WW7: New News is Old News tackles a very contemporary topic as social media transforms into a more legitimate form of assessing and communicating news, entertainment, and other media.

More about WW7 from the _gaia website:

This year the residency program is tackling the concept of real time media and the ramifications of our evolving relationship with news. It is co-curated by Doris Cacoilo and Maya Joseph-Goteiner.

In our society, the importance of news has shifted; some would argue that it has been elasticized or else devalued. As the blogosphere replaces the daily newspaper as the purveyor and distributor of breaking news, the reporting of events is no longer filtered by the journalist/editor. Instead the voice of news is replaced by a dynamic exchange of information.

Already, online, the same article that has appeared black on white in the early print edition has been updated, corrected or even replaced on the web. Newspaper stories no longer fit the Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition of news as “a report of recent events: previously unknown information.” In many respects, we have created an endless source of updated information online, a bottomless pit of patter. We cannot possibly consume all the news and commentary published online, and while few people have the time to read the entire newspaper, even fewer can keep up with the minute-to-minute updates via Twitter, blogs, online publications, and RSS feeds.

Jersey City Art School (JCAS) is a for-profit collective in downtown Jersey City, designed with the community's residents in mind and using its wealth of artistic resources. Its focus is on growth of the individual artist—those involved can learn new skills, build a portfolio, or just hone their existing technique in an environment that fosters communication, even friendship, with others who have the same interests and talent. As the school expands, it will continue to look to local artists to participate both as students and instructors, further developing the lively arts scene in Jersey City and beyond.

Founded in 2010 by Keith Chiappone and Narciso Espiritu Jr., Instigatorzine is an independent literature and art magazine providing a platform for writers and artists who have none. Based in Jersey City and Bayonne, NJ, Instigatorzine receives submissions from all over the world and publishes them in a bi-monthly schedule. Instigatorzine is also one of few magazines that creates illustrations for submitted literature. Instigatorzine is not about reptiles.

Phil Noto is going to be a having an exhibition at Bold Hype in NYC tomorrow. Isn't that exciting? "35mm" collects new work and art the artist has tributed to films such as Blade Runner, Drive, and countless others. Since big galleries never want to give Instigatorzine press previews, here's some work we think might be at the exhibition:

_gaia's fifth Wonder Women residency compelled artists to look into their heritage and identity. Here's more from the _gaia website:

With the passing of time, advances in technology, transportation and an ever homogenizing economic global market, the world is a seemingly smaller place. Emigration and immigration have become less arduous, less final and less difficult – technically. However, the issues of identity, home, family, culture and politics are ever present and ever more complex. As conflicts change landscapes and relationships and economies grow with enticing opportunity and fail with devastating consequence, people are forced to make decisions of place and home that have lasting effects on their identity and the identities of their descendants.

Wonder Women invites 10 artists to reflect on notions of home and identity addressing emigration and immigration. We invite artists who have chosen to make the US their new home or who are descendents of immigrants to participate in a residency program that will focus on exploring immigration through the lens of feminism and social change. Weekly discussions will address issues related to art, identity, migration, economy, war, displacement, opportunity, government and policy. Each participant is encouraged to contribute to the discussion and to the source materials.

This weekend was the Artists’ Studio Tour in Jersey City and boy was it spectacular! IZ’s Elias Jimenez and his often on-and-off partner in solving crimes, Christina De Lucia (filling in for Dr. John Watson), set out to Jersey City’s First Annual Land of the Free-Form Arts and Music Festival to interview the very lovely Meghan McKee A.K.A. the woman behind the musical and artsy madness.

IZ: So for those that don’t know too much about you or anything at all, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Meghan: Sure, I’m a sculptor, I am a WFMU DJ, I’m...oh my god, I’m a little bit of everything (laughs).

IZ: A Jack of all trades!...A Renaissance Woman!

M: Yea, I really am it’s kind of bad. I have my hands in a lot of cookie jars it seems. I work for a sculptor, I am a sculptor, I DJ around Jersey City, and also at WFMU so...

IZ: Wow, I guess you have your hands full then, huh?

M: (laughing) Yea.

Imag2172

IZ: What prompted you to start this event here?

M: Well, I live across the street, so I come out to this park everyday and I’ve been living up here for about 2 1/2 years, and from living up here you kind of see spaces that have so much potential, I mean look at this view! This view’s amazing! So I thought, this has got to be the backdrop to something, and the more I kept thinking about it the more I thought, “You know, we really need to have something up here.” Then one day someone had some music playing in the gazebo and because the acoustics were amazing I thought, what better a place than this to have a show. And because of that I wanted to go further and get some stuff happening, that plus as an artist and living up here, nobody comes to the Heights.

IZ: Yea, that sometimes is the impression.

M: This area is slated as a “River View Art District,” and it’s not; it hasn’t been zoned for it. That’s why we don’t have awesome things like coffee shops and stuff like that. In order for an area to develop, you gotta have good things, and we’re kinda being held back which sucks because there’s a lot of artists and musicians that live up here, too.

IZ: Definitely.

Imag2173

M: People are getting priced out of downtown, and they’re moving up here, and want to invest into the community, but how can you do it if there’s nothing to invest back into?

IZ: Right.

M: So, my thinking behind it was why not have something during the Artists’ Studio Tour, and I wanted to get as many dots on the map as possible, and have them be really good dots. You know, I could have my studio open, but why not bring more people up with music? I have the potential for it since I work at a radio station, and I have three other DJs curating a show with me, so why not?

IZ: So you said this is the first time you’ve done this, right? Did you run into any trouble getting it together?

M: We had four months to put this together; just me and my friend Tina, who runs this non-profit organization called Peace by Piece, through her I threw out these ideas of getting art going on in the Heights and she was like “YES! When can we start? We’re already a day late!” And it was perfect, we both have the same passions, we both have the same excitement, and so we’re like “Why not go do this? Let’s do something crazy.” I’m the one who kinda came up with the crazy festival end of it, and she was like “YES! Let’s do this!” you know, so she pushed me.

Imag2166

IZ: So tell me a little about what you have going on here, I noticed earlier that you guys were doing something with canvas’ off to the side, what’s all that about? Is that one of the events?

M: Well at around 6 P.M. I should be having these stencil street artists from Iran come by, and they kind of do a Banksy-style of stenciling. They came from Tehran, and they just came over...

IZ: Just for this!

M: (laughing) Yea! Especially for me! No, they’re living with my ending band The Yellow Dogs and they’re from Tehran as well, and now they live in Brooklyn. They’re pretty amazing.

IZ: Will you be doing this event again next year?

M: Yea, I want to do more. I want to be able to change some things up and tweak it, you know, but still the same idea and have it grow. And hopefully, through this, other people in the heights will realize, “You know what? Maybe we can start having art related things up here.”

IZ: Well Meghan, thank you for your time, and hopefully next year we’ll have Instigatorzine here selling some magazines, too!

You can see more of what Meghan’s got her hands into over at her site at: http://www.meghanmckee.com/

You can also tune in to WFMU if you wanna hear her DJ and while you’re at it, check out the website at: http://www.wfmu.org/

And make sure you all attend the 2nd Annual Land of the Freeform Arts and Music Festival in 2013!

Recalling exactly when is difficult, but I have a good feeling that Wonder Women$: Money Money Money!, is the first time I noticed _gaia and the good they were doing for women artists. While I didn't get to see their show for WW$,  I saw a superfluous amount or promotional material , which was really well designed, I might add.

Money makes the world go around.  Time is money.  Money doesn’t grow on trees.  A penny saved is a penny earned. Money is the root of all evil.  Put your money where your mouth is.  Money to burn.  A penny for your thoughts.  A pretty penny.  Top dollar.  A buck and a dream.  A fool and his money are soon parted.  Easy come, easy go.  Buyer beware.  No money down.  Penny wise and pound foolish.  You have to be in it to win it.  Take the money and run.  Go for gold.  Your money or your life.  Beggars can’t be choosers. We make money, not art.  Cash for gold.  Can’t buy me love.  Money changes everything.  Right on the money.  Dirty money.  Funny money.  Money money money.

Money takes all forms in our world. Essential as it is to the day-to-day workings of our society, it is a complex and abstract thought object.  At its most basic, money is a unit of currency, to be traded for goods or services. In contrast to this, it can also be magical, mythical and imaginary.  Rather than the straightforward nature of currency, magical money is based on hopes, desires and fears.  For a dollar, you can buy the dream of winning the lottery. In return for a monthly premium, you get peace of mind.

But at what cost?  Our society encourages a culture of debt, even positing it as a patriotic duty in times of economic downturn.  For many, debt is a reality, not a choice.  What are the alternatives to this cycle of want and spend?  How do systems like bartering, microlending and resource sharing change our relationship to money?

In 2008 _gaia was pleased to present WW$: MoneyMoneyMoney!! The six-week residency brings together ten emerging artists to engage in discussions about their work, the economy, feminism, and personal relationships to money.

Yesterday, I stopped by the JCAST 2012 Kickoff Party space. I was told I had to help set up in order to get some exclusive (or not-so-exclusive) footage of the space. To say that I was blown away by the amount of work by the Jersey City arts community that went into the Tenmarc space is an understatement. An under-understatement even. Everyone who is planning on attending the Kickoff Party tomorrow evening is sure to be in for a treat. Amazing structures built by Michelle Mumoli, Thomas Carlson, Anne McTernan, and others are just as beautiful as the artwork that hangs on them. And of course, illuminations by light architect Norm Francoeur never fail as being some of the best lighting design around. Multiple art communities such as Jersey City Art School, Not Yo Mama's Craft Fairs, _gaia Studio, Pop-Up Art, and others also have artwork to display and enjoy.

There aren't enough superlatives to describe the space. You really just must go tonight.

(Shuttles from Grove Street PATH will take out-of-towners to the event space, by the way.)

5647320708_256ae4342c_b

In 2008, the _gaia Wonder Women residency invited ten artists from the New Jersey/New York area to participate in a program to engage in discussion about their work, the cultural climate, the history of art, war, feminism, and social change. WWIII was interested in creating a dialogue and artwork that explores the issues of war and protest in a modern age. Each participant was encouraged to bring to weekly discussions, their interest in readings, artist heroes, activist heroes, feminist heroes, ideas, etc. As the projects came into focus, it became clear that we are living in a state of misunderstanding of what it means to live with war.

The exhibition and residency explores questions that arise out of our need to process our current relationship to war. Are we in the throes of a third world war? What would another world war look like? How would an escalation in the current war on terror affect our lives, and those of the people of this planet? What have we learned from our violent histories? How can we reflect our fears, concerns, and protests through our artwork and activism?

WWIII became a collective journey to determine our level of knowledge of a world at war, as well as to set a new standard of living with compassion and awareness. Each project represents a personal struggle with war and it’s effect on the future’s certainty, our use of the planet’s resources, personal stability, intimate relationships, limited knowledge of geography and world events, and everyday routines.
